About Wear Your Helmet
Wearyourhelmet.org is a collaborative effort between Harvey Grad and Bicycle Paper/Seattle Publishing. We are continually collecting and updating information about when, where, and how children and adults in the Washington, Oregon, and Idaho communities can acquire a helmet at a reduced or free price. This website will include programs, events, Bicycle Rodeos, etc. If you are interested in having your event or program listed on our website, please contact Amy Ensign by phone at 206.903.1333, or by email at amy@bicyclepaper.com.
About Bicycle Paper
Started in 1972 as the Great Bicycle Conspiracy, Bicycle Paper is produced eight times per year in the Pacific Northwest. The publication contains the area’s most comprehensive bicycle calendar, product reviews, race and ride coverage, health column, feature articles and opinion pieces. It is staffed by a group of cyclists committed to providing the region with information on events, legislation, and issues. Various staff members of Bicycle Paper can be seen at numerous cycling events throughout the season, including Bike Expo, the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic, the Bicycle Alliance of Washington’s Annual Auction, and the Courage Classic.
Recently, a staff member was in a cycling accident while wearing his helmet. This close call led to discussions about helmet use in the community, and how Bicycle Paper could best contribute to this important cause. When approached by Harvey Grad to create wearyourhelmet.org, Bicycle Paper realized that this was a great opportunity to further our community involvement, and to contribute to a project that we believe very strongly in.
About Harvey Grad
Harvey Grad has been practicing law for 32 years. After graduating from Cal-Western School of Law in 1975, he moved to Seattle and began his career. At the 1987 Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic, Harvey realized that our community is home to a lot of cyclists. He began volunteering for Cascade Bicycle Club projects and legally representing injured cyclists in the area.
As Harvey became more involved with the cycling community here in the Northwest, he became increasingly concerned with the lack of helmets worn by bicyclists. He approached Bicycle Paper/Seattle Publishing with the idea of creating wearyourhelmet.org, a website devoted to increasing bicycle helmet availability and awareness in the community. Harvey has participated in many cycling events, including STP, Redspoke, and Wheels of Love. He also contributed to Cascade Bicycle Club’s Education Foundation helmet project.
